Walleye Fishing Tournament Tourney Weigh In

July 27th, 2007

The Super Pros spread out on Wabigoon Lake and connecting lakes, mostly fishing shallow rock reefs or casting to the hundreds of islands scattered throughout the system. Following a 5 a.m. thundershower, anglers faced cloudy skies and temperatures that barely eased past the 80-degree mark until 1 p.m., compared to the mid-nineties of the previous day.

Leader Brumbaugh has two PWT victories to his credit, including a Mercury Championship a decade ago. He was casting crankbaits to key reefs and “secret” spots he found in practice. While the PWT television camera was recording the action in his boat, a 50-inch musky grabbed on, and after a terrific tussle, became a TV hero. Anglers reported catching numerous 50-inch muskies on walleye tackle, and were also landing smallmouth bass and many northern pike. Brumbaugh said, “I like to catch big pike, because after I catch a few, the walleyes start biting; they’re right there with the big pike.”

The weigh-in was held in the Dryden Memorial Arena from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will again take place Friday. The winners will be crowned immediately after the final boat weighs. Leading the amateur/co-angler side is Reid Norine, Oakdale, Minn. Dryden angler Greg Waites is second, followed by Ontario fishermen Rick Socholotuk, Ft. Frances, third, and Neil Michelin, Sioux Lookout, fourth. Waites fished with St. Peter and together, they caught the big fish.

Lake Manitoba Narrows Walleye Fishing Tournament 2

July 26th, 2007

The avid fisherman and fisherwomen anglers fished in almost every corner of the system, favoring shallow rock reefs. The walleyes were in two to eight feet of water, and jigs with bait and jigs with Power Bait or Gulp! Were the preferred tactics. Some anglers cast crank baits; others rigged or ran spinners and bottom-bouncers.

Vandal was jigging and casting crank baits. His two “over” were in the mid-60 inch range (each boat could weigh two walleyes over 18 inches), and gave him a total of 19 pounds for five walleyes – three were 14 to 18 inches. Bromberg said, “I think we caught more than 100 walleyes today. Lake Manitoba Narrows is loaded with a tons walleyes. The big ones are here; it’s just a matter of being shallow enough when they move up to feed.”

The PWT camera crews were on the water taking in the action, and hook-sets were common; so were 50 to 100 fish a day per day. Additionally, northern pike exceeding 20 pounds (lots in the 10 to 15 pound range), giant muskies and big smallmouth were landed. Several small walleyes ended up in the middle of tug-of-wars with pike and muskies, with the anglers losing the battles.

Walleye Fishing Master

have twice won AOY on the Walleye Tour. His first AOY title came in 2003. In addition, he is the only pro to have finished in the top 10 in three consecutive tournaments. In those last three tournaments alone, the BP pro has won $127,500. He will have a chance for an even bigger payday in Cleveland as the No. 1-seeded angler at the $675,850 Walleye Tour Championship.

In a typical year, the AOY race would have been decided much earlier, but it came down to the final day of the final qualifier. Gilman entered the Bays de Noc event with a 4-point lead and he finished the tournament in 13th place. That left little room for error for Przekurat, but he continued to do what he did all season – put walleyes in the boat.

“I wasn’t worried about winning that tournament at all. I just wanted to win Angler of the Year,” he said. “The first one was awesome, but the second one was better. It’s surreal. It’s almost like you’re looking at it from the outside. It’s ultimately every angler’s goal at the beginning of the season to win the Angler of the Year, but it takes a lot of luck and skill. I give all my success as a pro angler to the support that my family gives me. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Przekurat started the Walleye Tour season off with a 12th-place effort on the Detroit River in Trenton, Mich. After the Detroit River event, he then claimed his first tour-level victory and $100,000 on the Mississippi River in Red Wing, Minn. Not only did he win, he set an unofficial four-day weight record on that stretch of the Mississippi. He also set a Walleye Tour record for margin of victory – 20 pounds, 13 ounces to be exact. His success continued at Devils Lake in Devils Lake, N.D., where Przekurat earned his second top-10 finish, completing the tournament in ninth place. He wrapped up the qualifying season with a fourth-place finish on Bays de Noc in Escanaba, Mich.

Bass Fishing Tourament ……

July 23rd, 2007

It’s been a pretty solid practice for me so far. The fish are really scattered and they’re good in all depth ranges. I’m trying to figure out what areas are best to fish and moving up and down the lake to find those key areas. I’ve got stuff close and stuff far away, but it’s a chess match to decide when to go and which areas to go to. The key to success and real wild card in this tournament is that pro who has a spot or two that won’t receive any additional pressure, a spot he has all to himself.” – Paul Hirosky, 37, Guys Mill, Pa., one-time BASS winner, 87th in Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings

“Practice hasn’t been going as well as expected. I haven’t been able to get the good quality smallmouth bass that I expected up here. I have a couple areas that I’m working on and I’m planning on going in early for a limit around 16 pounds and then will upgrade throughout the day.” – Rick Ash, 56, Pottstown, Pa., Elite Series pro 106th in Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year standings

The StrategyBrauer: He is targeting smallmouth bass using a variety of methods including power fishing with crankbaits and spinner baits. He also is drop-shotting tubes. He is working offshore humps and points and finding the key depth each day that holds the bass. Of his primary locations, his shallowest area is 10 feet and deepest is 35 feet. Brauer feels that wind will play a deciding factor in where he will fish, as will the weights brought to the scales by the other Elite Series pros. If the wind remains calm, he estimates the winning weight to be near 80 pounds.

Hirosky: The Pennsylvanian has several locations that he can run to throughout the tournament and describes the bass as scattered. His primary techniques include tubes and drop-shotting. He estimates that it will take 14 to 15 pounds each day to make the cut to the top 50 and the winning weight will be more than 80 pounds.

Bassmasters

Evers, 32, totaled 65 pounds, 7 ounces, over the course of the tournament, which was shortened from four days to three because of inclement weather, to win his first Bassmaster Elite Series event and the $100,000 top prize. With the victory, the four-time BASS winner has totaled more than $1 million in career earnings – the 19th BASS angler to accomplish that feat.

Fishing fans can catch all of the on-the-water action from the Empire Chase on The Bassmasters at 9 a.m. ET Saturday, July 28, on ESPN2.

“This is one of the most awesome days in my whole life,” Evers said of the final day. “This is unbelievable. To tell you the truth, I didn’t even really know if I won it, even though I had such a great day.”

Ironically, Evers doesn’t consider fishing for smallmouth as one of his strengths. With the victory, the versatile Oklahoma pro expanded his skill set.

Throughout the tournament, Evers drop-shotted a green pumpkin Yum Houdini worm in 36 to 42 feet of water. During the first day of competition, Evers scored a sixth-place finish despite motor trouble that cost him some of his fishing day. Saturday, he took over the lead with a 21-pound limit, and he closed the deal Sunday with the big limit.

Kiriyama totaled 61 pounds, 7 ounces, of smallmouth and posted the best Elite Series finish of his career. The 36-year-old keyed on areas that were filled with shad, primarily working a worm. He was traveling farther from the launch site than any of the other competitors, trekking almost 60 miles each day.

“Today was a beautiful day,” said Kiriyama, who notched his fifth second-place finish in BASS competition. “The key to my success was adjusting to the weather. I had my areas all to myself and we don’t experience that too often.”

In third was John Murray of Phoenix, with 60 pounds, 8 ounces. In fourth was Terry Butcher, also of Talala, with 60 pounds, 3 ounces. Butcher shared an area with Evers, his brother in law, for much of the tournament but left the area to Evers on the final day.

In fifth was Greg Hackney of Gonzales, La., with 59 pounds, 15 ounces. Hackney’s limit included a 5-pound, 10-ounce smallmouth that earned Purolator Big Bass Honors for the day.

Thursday’s leader Paul Hirosky, of Guy Mills, Pa., slipped to eighth with 58 pounds, 1 ounce.
