Sunburn

Each year there are enough people who develop an incapacitating sunburn which ruins many days of good vacation time that we should emphasize a better understanding of the perils of too much sunlight. Solar radiation, the fancy name for the rays of the sun, reaches the earth in three basic forms; ultra-violet, visible light and infra-red. These are separated by different wave lengths for each type of radiation, the shortest being ultra-violet and progressing through the visible colors of the spectrum. The longest are the infra-red. The trouble comes in the short wave lengths, the ultra-violet rays, which penetrate through clear skies or cloud cover and produce the reddened, inflamed and blistered skin which is all too familiar to the incautious fisherman. It is the ability of ultra-violet radiation to penetrate through a cloudy sky which produces sunburns on days when the visible light of the sun never appears.
