Hot Walleye Fishing Action

Fishing has been pretty decent in all areas of the province.
I managed to catch my first walleye over 28 inches this year on Lake of the Woods while rigging on leeches. The fish took the bait in 12 feet of water and put up a great battle. We managed to boat a few toothy critters and saw several Muskies following our offerings in heavy weeds.
Jody Moon managed to boat one of the pink finned beasts while trolling. After an aerial show the lunge was released to swim again.
The walleye have been moving out to the reefs and have been relating to water depth of 14-30 feet.
Be careful
Some anglers are fishing deeper water 35-40 feet. This is a sure way to kill the fish. If you are fishing this deep, chances are that a released fish is a dead fish. Walleye are not like lake trout and do not have the ability to “burp” to remove air from their bladder. You have to be careful and try not to take fish from these depths.
You sure have to be careful when fishing the Red River, sometimes you don’t realize the strength of the current and the consequences of a careless mistake.
If you take your children down to shore fish on the river banks it is imperative that they were life jackets. The strength of the river took two lives this past week. Angling is a great sport but any water system must be treated with respect in a boat or on the shore. The current at the locks can be fast and furious, caution must be the focus while fishing below the dam. We have some of the best angling in the province within a few minutes of town, be safe and aware of the potential dangers in your surroundings. It is devastating to lose a life from any cause and my heart goes out to the family who lost their loved ones.
Crow Duck Lake has been on fire. Get your kids out for some of the hottest walleye action available.
